What is the biggest paper bill in Korea?
The first modern newspaper in Korea was printed in the late Joseon era. It was written in Hangeul and the first to be privately owned, relying on sales revenues and private contributions rather than on advertising from large corporations. Its founder, Seo Jae-pil, used the paper to enlighten the people and denounce absurd Joseon officials.
During Syngman Rhee’s military government, many moderate newspapers were closed and editors and reporters arrested under a variety of emergency decrees and press laws. The military government also used the government-controlled mass media to promote its agenda and to defame the opposition.
Under Chun Doo-hwan’s National Security Act of 1980, the government established more thorough control and surveillance of the news media than had existed since the Korean War. Independent news agencies were absorbed into the state-run Yonhap News Agency, provincial newspapers were closed and central newspapers were forbidden to station correspondents in provincial cities, and a number of independent broadcasting stations were absorbed into the KBS radio and television networks.
With the advent of political liberalization in the late 1980s, the media began to expand. A public campaign against censorship of the TV networks, including an effort to withhold compulsory viewer fees in protest of the censorship of a program, received widespread press attention.
